[Food review] Gammeeok

I went with Lils to watch Finding Dory. To be honest, it wasn't as entertaining to me as Finding Nemo. For others, they found Dory more interesting than Nemo. Either way, there were some good parts and boring parts. After the movie, my friend introduced me to Gammeok, a Korean eatery that can very easily be missed.

It's so easy to miss that they have staff outside giving out fliers. The door is narrow and you walk up to the second floor. Lils said that her friends went their for a good meal. So let's give Gammeok a try. When I walked in, I was very impressed by the interior. It's a modern styled eatery putting a lot of emphasis on wood surfaces for tables, floors, and even the wall. Unlike traditional Korean restaurants, you don't get banchan. Your only banchan is house kimchi and raddish served in a pot. They give you scissors so that you cut the kimchi yourself. Hmm. Interesting already.

Every restaurant has their own style of kimchi. Gammeok's is very strong in flavor. It's not as acidic as Muk eun ji's aged kimchi as this one is fresh, but it is very tart. It goes very well with rice and soups. The cubed raddish is heaven to me. I can chomp on it all alone. The menu is kept very simple. Probably less than 40 items if I ever count it properly. I ordered a sundae guk for about $13. Sundae is Korean blood sausage made with offal and rice noodles. Lils gave me the look of "are you really gonna eat that?" Hell yeah I am. You think I'm afraid of a few intestines?

I was kind of disappointed with the sundae. It's more rice than offal. Then I read online that some restaurants serve sundae that contain large chunks of offal which gave me hope that one day I can have that kind of sundae. The soup for my sundae guk was milky as you can tell they had been boiling the pork and beef stock for a long time. There were only 5 pieces of sundae and a mere 3 pieces of sliced beef plus some chives for garnish. That was pretty much it. The sauce that came with my meal was a spicy kind of fish sauce. At least I think it was a fish-based sauce because it had that fermented taste.

Gammeok is not a bad place to be in. I missed Muk eun ji though after having my sundae. We noticed a lot of customers came and go. They order roughly the same portions as us and eat really fast. The place was bustling with people. When we sat down, a lot people were also seated. The place got loud really quick. Almost too loud. It was to the point I could no longer hold a conversation so my friend and I pretty much ate in silence and made eye contact occasionally. Muk eun ji, I will visit you again soon enough.
