Winter Plans Before the Autumn Leaves Fall

It's only October and I'm already thinking about December. Most people are getting hyped about Halloween and I'm one of those few people that aren't a bit interested. Dressing up and enjoying the spookiness just isn't my type of thing. I already watch enough hack and slash on TV. Maybe surprising to others, I am already preparing for December's festivities. While freezing homes and shoveling snow is not my favorite thing, cold weather is something I look forward to. For some reason, I enjoy the cold. I get less angry and can be more productive.

December around the world can mean very different things, but for the most part in Europe and in North America it does conjure up images of the holiday season. Holiday season means festivities like I mentioned. There's definitely a lot of feasting to be done, people to see, homes to visit, and events to enjoy. Two years ago, I started visiting the holiday markets in New York City because one of my classmates had talked about going to one. I had never heard of a holiday market before and thus decided to try one. Or a few. I went to pretty much three of them in one day. It was cold during each of them and there was a lot of walking. I never bought anything from the vendors because it was always out of my budget. However it does open your eyes on what there can be. I've seen a macaroon stand, an old maps stand, so much candle stands, and even a wooden tie stand. Perhaps this year I will find something I desire.

Feasting is an important part of the month. I stock up on a lot of ingredients because of Christmas and New Years. I remember one year my local supermarket was having a sale on ricotta. Having never eaten ricotta before, I bought one container for a lasagna recipe and was mindblown. I had the impression that it is strong smelling, sticky, and possible greasy. It was a new thing at home and I enjoyed it except for my mom who was really against trying new things outside her comfort zone. Then another year, they had a sale on whole fennel and I enjoyed making fennel meat. I wonder what they're going to put on sale this year. I already started planning out a menu for Christmas dinner since my parents should take a break on that day and my lazy brother never helps out. Maybe I should try making panettone like I promised to do last year.

Another thing to do this year is watch a movie. The final Hobbit movie is coming in December and every year, I watch it with a good friend of mine who is also a Hobbit fan. What's funny is that we barely talk now, but we always remember that in the last four years we have to see each other over a movie. Once the Hobbit movies are over, I guess we'll have to find another movie to enjoy.

This year's winter was predicted to be colder and longer by some people. If that is so, I wouldn't be able to hang out as much as I would like to. I need company during the winter and staying cooped inside isn't going to help. A New Years bash isn't fun alone.
