Movie Review: Big Hero 6
I went with my cousin to watch Big Hero 6. I heard many positive reviews about it and I don't want to miss it since it's still on screen. Disney hasn't let me down with their films from animation to music. I was looking forward to seeing what they have for Big Hero 6. I was surprised to see that they decided to show the title at the end of the movie.
Before the actual movie began, it opened the film with a short. It was my first time seeing a short in a movie theater. My brother told me that all Pixar and now Disney productions accompany a full length movie with a short. I guess this was my lucky day to see one at last in theater. The short we watched was called "Feast". Without giving too much away, a Boston terrier shows a chain of events through all his meal experiences.
The story is set in a fictional city of San Fransokyo, a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo. Hiro Hamada is an intelligent 13 year old having already completed high school. His brother, Tadashi, brings Hiro to his robotics lab and inspires Hiro to apply to the university. Tadashi shows Hiro his invention, Baymax, a personal healthcare robot. At the university fair where Hiro gets accepted into the program with his invention of microbots, a fire erupts taking away Tadashi and leaving Hiro extremely depressed. Some time after, Hiro accidentally turns Baymax on and notices a peculiar movement in one of his microbot pieces leading him to an abandoned warehouse where he realizes that the fire at the university was a set-up and not an accident. A masked man attacks Hiro and Baymax with newly manufactured microbots, but Hiro and Baymax escape in time. Hiro is determined to catch the masked man with the help of his friends by creating superhero suits to conquer the masked man and his microbots.
What sets this movie apart is its new look on "nerd" culture. It encourages kids to be fascinated by science and engineering by giving them a look into real principles and phenomenons. I don't see a lot of kids' shows introduce the periodic table that often. It's all about how you approach them. Big Hero 6 has a good story teaching a younger audience about loss and grieving, and also a good moral approach on how to deal with revenge. Ironically Baymax being a healthcare robot reflects what society today needs most, good healthcare.
I liked the music and animation in the movie a lot. What I didn't like was the song they used, "Immortals" by Fall Out Boy. This is more of a personal preference. I didn't like the song because it didn't sound like a well written and composed piece of music. Compared to their older music, this song isn't Fall Out Boy's best work. Still I recommend this movie to all ages. There's some really funny jokes and also a teary goodbye scene that makes it such a great movie.
