Movie Review: Rise of the Guardians
Two Christmases have passed and I have finally gotten the time to watch Rise of the Guardians. I don't know when I will be able to watch Frozen. Next year maybe? The last few years of school had cut me off from entertainment in general and it couldn't be helped. Now that I have time, it's time to catch up on things. Rise of the Guardians first caught by interest with its trailer. You have Santa, Sandman, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy as guardians of children around the world. Santa has tattoos and a Russian accent. That's kinda cool you know. The Santas I knew only knew how to say "ho ho ho".
So far a lot of girls have been telling me that they love Jack Frost's character design. They're right. He's cute and very cheeky. The character designs for the rest of the cast were great too. I saw that they drew many references to the original designs for the book series. Toothy for instance with her little hummingbird fairies have a very colorful and elegant look. Pitch is always shrouded in black and the animators made sure that in whatever lighting he is under, there'll always be a black gradient. Bunny's rabbit hole portal led to this amazing forest with large stone egg deities reminiscent of Easter Island stone idols. I think the humor throughout the movie was great. It's not just simply the accents, but the different situations the story presents. The drama brings you going up and down. The entire thing with being guardians of children is a whole metaphor of protecting one's naivete and wonder. Jack Frost's fear is not just unable to be seen, but to be recognized as someone in this world.
I don't have any picky criticisms for this film. I liked it so much and there wasn't anything that I didn't like. It's perfect for children to watch and I'm sure adults will something in the film to enjoy. The strongest points in the film was putting a spin on nostalgic characters. Santa's workshop is no longer some wooden house in the North Pole, but a special headquarters with working yetis, not elves. The soundtrack was stunning and I wasn't surprised to see Alexandre Desplat in the credits. It had his style of whimsical moments mixed in high drama.

Loved that film. Great short analysis of the artwork.
ReplyDeleteI loved the movie! I kind of wish there was more info about 'Man in Moon' and the history of the guardians and Pitch more explained. Because it seemed like Pitch was created by 'Man in Moon' the maker of the Guardians. But, who knows?
