Local bakeries are the little gems of the neighborhood. To a newcomer they may not be on your radar, but for the frequent customer, it becomes your hotspot.
Catania Bakery was one of the bakeries that I consider a little gem. While there are many other bakeries and pastry shops in the neighborhood, Catania was recently my favorite find. I think their prices for pastries are reasonable. My friend and I decided to try Catania to add to our picnic foods. We got four pastries that cost roughly $3 each. They each had filling and were rather large in size. I am reminded of city bakeries where they charge $4 or more for a tart no bigger the size of your palm.
To sum it up, we purchased a lobster tail, an eclair, a pastry with a long name I don't remember, and a cheesecake. The eclair was in fact our biggest disappointment. It saddened me to know that it tasted like cardboard. It's like biting into a generic supermarket brand pastry shell filled with rather bland pastry cream. The other three pastries tasted just fine. Our favorite was the one with the long name. It's like having a perfectly fried donut filled with sweetened ricotta cheese. These would go great with a nice coffee.
