[Movie Review] Gintama The Movie: The Final Chapter Be Forever Yorozuya
I have to admit, it was a pretty funny movie and it didn't disappoint.
This may be a anime title, but Gintama's been known to break the fourth wall and crap on themselves. It parodies a lot of existing tropes and sometimes if not always blatantly taunts the trends you commonly see in anime. Despite the parody, it still has elements of shounen like the power of friendship and positive values learned through struggle. It was one hell of a ride watching this one.
I do not recommend this movie as a way to get into the anime. Many of the jokes highly rely on the viewer's previous knowledge of the series. For the original fans, this movie is a treat. It's not a rehash like Benizakura-hen. Be Forever Yorozuya is an original story following the timeline (kinda). The story took many twists and turns to get to the core. You can see that in the trailer that Gin's past will be revealed (again kinda, but still flows with the timeline) and everyone gets a makeover which ended up really funny.
The Final Chapter is really playing with the heartstrings of the fans. It has its really funny moments like Gin arriving at a future Kabukicho and then it has some of its dramatic moments like facing with the problem of sacrifice to save all. Again, it was very really enjoyable to watch. My criticism is that because the writers didn't want to spin things too out of control so they used time travel as a way to keep the original events in place. The main characters are still the Yorozuya trio so don't expect other characters to get too much screen time even though they all contribute to the plot one way or another.
I am three years late watching the movie, but I still wanted to review it.
