In times of stress and depression, I sometimes use anime as a way to calm myself. It has been said that looking at 2D images relaxes the brain. I have used hack and slash genres to feel better, but blood and gore is not everyone's preferred medicine. Here are a few animes that have seem to do the trick for me in keeping me happy and motivated. I wish that the new year may progress with positive motivation and joy.
Yakitate!! Japan
I have watched this series too many times already and seem to never get bored of it. While a lot of the jokes rely heavily on Japanese puns, their sense of humor is enough to make each episode funny enough. There's a good balance of suspense and action in the story by providing the audience with very relatable characters and despicable villains. What makes this series great is how every bread made in the series can be done in real life.
Chuuka Ichiban (Cooking Master Boy)
Another food series that I enjoyed since I was a kid. As it takes the audience on a long journey to experience much of authentic Chinese cuisine, the positive and genuine nature of the protagonist, Mao, was what drawn my interests in. Even towards the vilest of antagonists, he is calm to assess the situations and towards some, show compassion.
Gintama
Nonsensical and disturbing to some viewers, Gintama has a weird equation for a series. For the most part, its success lies in various parodies and slapstick, but it also has some sort of moral at the end of the story worth learning about. Sometimes I do wonder where Sorachi gets his ideas from to make me laugh at some of these jokes.
Get Backers
Take a duo that specializes in finding lost items and some really bad luck with money, you get "The Get Backers". Part of the lineup of popular early 2000 animes, it keeps a good spirit alive with its humor and action.
Yu Yu Hakusho (The Poltergeist Report)
Is there really a need to explain this classic? Bash your foes away!
History's Greatest Disciple Kenichi
Real fighting techniques in almost every episode and always will Kenichi be the first to run away. Even knowing that new antagonists will keep appearing, Kenichi is a characters that leaves the viewer very hopeful as opposed to despair.
Genso Maden Saiyuki
It's really no spoiler to say that even after four anime adaptations, with each worse than the one before, Sanzo and the party never reach their destination. The first adaptation is possibly the best adaptation mainly because of the dialogue. The English dub had a very good cast and the rewritten lines still captured the slapstick comedy.
Magi
One of the few newer series that I thoroughly enjoy. Aladdin is portrayed as a ten year old kid with an unbelievable power and a penchant for huge breasts. The series brought the Arabian fantasy to life with re-imagining of characters from 1001 Arabian Nights.
Slam Dunk
Is it possible to break Hanamichi's spirit at all? His devotion and persistence if you would call it leads him to grow into a very lovable character.
Prince of Tennis
Why not throw in another sports series? I feel like even towards the end, the absurd and impossible tennis techniques accompanied with impossible characters make the series more interesting.
